GLB Invest is bound to become one of the largest center-pivot irrigated alfalfa farms in the world. The journey began in 2011 with 87,200 hectares of land secured in the Wad Hamed area under a 99-year renewable lease from the Sudanese government.

Strategically located, the land is within 7km from the Nile River, 130km from Khartoum and 700km from Port Sudan, the gateway to target markets such as the KSA, UAE and China.

Necessary annual water rights were secured. The company acquired a riverbank of 300m x 200m directly off the Nile to place the various pumping stations in addition to a 7km x 50m corridor to connect the riverbank to the booster stations at the outskirts of the project by way of GRP pipes.

Sowing began less than two and half years after GLB’s launch with the first harvest completed at the end of February 2014.

The project will be developed over two phases with the aim of deploying 1,000 center-pivots that can irrigate 50,000 hectares of land with a capacity of over 750,000 tons of alfalfa per year in addition to various rotational crops including rhodes grass, sesame and others.

  • Phase 1, consists of 40 pivots (2,000 irrigated hectares) and was completed in October 2013
  • Phase 2, consists of additional 23 pivots, (1,150 irrigated hectares) and was completed in October 2014, bringing total alfalfa production capacity upwards to 60,000 tons per year for 2015
