THE WORLD IS FACING COUNTLESS CHALLENGES ON A GLOBAL SCALE, TO NAME A FEW: FOOD SECURITY, POLITICAL INSTABILITIES, GLOBAL WARMING, MALNUTRITION, AND POVERTY. DESPITE VARIOUS EFFORTS FROM LOCAL AND MULTINATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS WORLDWIDE, COUNTRIES SEEM TO BE SLOWLY DRIFTING TOWARDS THOSE INESCAPABLE FAIT-ACCOMPLI.
Sitting idle was thus not an option for FB Green. Taking matters into hands, although challenging, is never an obstacle for our team: food security became our business. We’re, tackling - active – but not necessarily finished.
We saw the outlook: global food production will need to rise between 60 and 100% by 2050 to feed a rapidly growing global population demanding more resource-intensive foods such as meat and dairy, which in turn will create additional demand for animal feed.
We also saw the problem: arable land is only expected to increase by 5% over this same period and taking into account water shortages, climate change and slowing growth in crop yields, feeding a world with 9 billion people is likely to lead to a dangerous global food crisis.
This is when we further depicted the solution: investing in agriculture today presents an incredible opportunity. And so we made it our mission at FB Green to unlock this opportunity by tackling food security starting with East Africa given the abundance of land and water.
GLB Invest in Sudan was our first project. The variables make Sudan the inevitable answer to food security: vast amounts of underutilized arable land, water and incentives for agri-investments. The true promise to be the “Food Basket of the Arab World” if not the entire world.
And then Ethiopia. Its fertile land, attractive climate, modernized infrastructure fueled by unprecedented economic growth and its investment incentives make it the ideal host for large-scale agriculture and agri-related projects.
Today we are able to cover the entire farming value chain from development, operations, trading; putting all of this expertise under project-specific investment funds that provide attractive returns to our partners.
